Tanya Tucker..Riding Into the Southwest
We
arrived at Tingley Coliseum just in time for the rodeo, each of us with a pint
of whiskey in our boot. The rodeo went well, they retired a 26 year old bronc
that night, that was pretty cool to send her out in front of the crowd. The
rodeo lasted about an hour and a half.
After the rodeo, the stage
dropped from the ceiling and several of the crew came out with benches for those
that had bought tickets on the actual arena floor. At this point the line of
people to get down there was pretty long. There were about 9,000 people in
attendance. The stage was finally set up and the band came out. Tanya's band
performed about three songs then the singer asked if we were ready for Tanya.
The crowd cheered and the lights went down.
The
famous "Trouble" intro begins and still, no Tanya (for a good three
minutes of intro). Suddenly the spotlight is pointed to the entrance of the
arena, and who other but the legendary Miss T appears entering the arena
on a black horse!
Tanya wore the red duster by Manuel that covered most of the horse. She galloped
around a couple of times while the crowd cheered and the spotlight followed her
in the dark arena. My cousin said that reminded her of Zorro when he came out
riding the horse. A grand entrance indeed.
Then
Tanya approached the stage and dismounted. She hopped on stage and sang the
opening to Trouble. After Trouble, she sang "Woman" then "Strong Enough." At
this point I was still in my nosebleed section. I drank another shot and said,
screw it, I'm finding a way to get down on that arena floor, front row. I asked
the man standing guard if he'd let me go take a picture, and he told me to come
right back. I walked all the way to the front where a large crowd was standing
taking pictures. I began snapping shots. I got there as Tanya was doing the
"vintage" set. She looked awesome from 10 feet away, as she must have lost
additional weight and grown her hair out even a bit more. After "Would
You
Lay With me", Tanya began asking the audience what we wanted to hear. Among
shouts, I requested "Teddy Bear." Guess what, she heard me! Tanya said she
hadn't done that song in a long time but she'd try. She started off a capella
then the band joined in. Tanya sang that song awesome. Then she proceeded to
sing "In the Ghetto" and told the crowd how Presley was named. She did "Window
up above" and imitated Jones a couple times and said they go back a long, long
time. She threw in a couple of Loretta imitations much to the applause of the
audience. She asked the audience for additional songs (something I never heard
of her doing before) then she belted out "Highway Robbery" at the request
of another fan.
After
this song she mentioned her lost jewelry and told us how she lost Jerry in the
caravan in Albuquerque and how she'd spent the day at a jewelry and hat store.
She said she had no hard feelings for either him or his girlfriend. Tanya
mentioned that she was still working on her album but didn't know when it would
be out but was looking forward to fans hearing her new music. She repeatedly
thanked her fans for supporting her through all these years. After Delta Dawn
she didn't mingle with fans in the first row as there was no access for fans to
approach the stage with the rails. I'd never seen her this close. Fans did stay
and shout hoping for an encore but the lights came on and we knew it was over.
What a memorable night it was and a great addition to our New Mexico State Fair.
