The Texas Tornado Touches Down In Hayward

So my ex-wife and I (Patty and I have remained friends) made our way to Hayward WI.  I used to live in Hayward in the late 80’s.  It is about a 2 hour drive from Duluth.  Patty and I made it to Hayward early because we wanted to be the first in line since it was an outdoor concert with festival seating.

We drove into the parking lot of LCO casino and parked right by the outdoor venue.  We saw Tanya’s bus was already here and Jim and Virginia were setting up.  Patty and I parked and went and said hi to Jim and Virginia.  Jim and Virginia are always so friendly and they work so hard.  It is always great to see them.  A Tanya concert just wouldn’t be the same without them.

Patty and I saw Jodi, Tanya’s wonderful assistant, working hard.  Jodi waved to us and said hi.  She was also very friendly.

We found where we needed to be in line.  It was about 1:45 in the afternoon.  The gates open at 4 and we were at the front of the line.    We were waiting for our friends Dorin and his lovely wife Lori.   Dorin found us in about 30 minutes and said he had our seats taken care of with the concert promoter.  How cool is that?  Patty, Dorin, Lori, and I then hit the lounge and got caught up with each other…Dorin, Get Lori a cell phone….

Dorin found out the meet ‘n’ greet was going to happen at about 6:15.  As a side note, Dorin is one of the most organized Tanya Tucker fans I know.  He has everything scoped out before the show starts.

We took our seats at 4:00.  Well, Dorin and the concert promoter are the best.  He scored 4 front row and center seats.  It doesn’t get any better, except they did have barricades in front of us so we couldn’t go up to the stage for autographs.  No big deal.

Some Elvis wannabe was the opening act.  Not really interested.  Dorin, Patty and I made our way to the Meet ‘n’ Greet and yep it was scheduled to take place.  We were told not to ask for any autographs because there was not any time.  It was about 6:30, and they let us in backstage.  At about 6:40, Tanya walked in with Layla.  Tanya looked wonderful and had a big smile on her face.  Layla has gotten so tall and is the spitting, image of her beautiful mama.

Patty got her pic taken first.  Then it was my turn.  I had to point out my tattoo and Tanya said you are crazy, Bob.  Yes, she remembered my name.  I was impressed.  She is always so gracious and I have to say, Layla is a little lady.  As I walked away, I heard Tanya say, “Man, they did a good job on that tattoo.”  Dorin got his picture taken next, and as he walked away, I heard Tanya say to Layla that those were two of her most important fans…..How cool is that?

The three of us made it back to our seats, which Lori was watching over for us.  We got back just in time to get our cameras ready and at about 7:00 sharp, the head of the casino came out to introduce Tanya.  Then that all-to-familiar music started…….

Some Kind of Trouble was the opening tune and out came a beautiful and happy Tanya looking better then ever.  It has been over a year since the last Tanya concert.  She looked and sounded great!  After Trouble, Tanya said Hi to the crowd and broke into I’ll Come Back as Another Woman.  The next song was Love Me Like You Used To, followed by Strong Enough to Bend.  Tanya brought out Layla and introduced her to the crowd.  Layla took mama’s microphone and sang a tune A Capella.  I don’t know what the name of the song was, but Layla has inherited her mama’s strong pipes.  She will be the next big singer in the family.

Tanya then talked more about Pressley and Beau Grayson and how they are living between Malibu and Tennessee.  Then she talked about when she was 16, this next song she was going to perform was a number 1 hit and she broke into San Antonio Stroll.

After Stroll, out came the chairs and the acoustic set was about to begin.  Tanya talked about how these were her early hits.  Jamestown Ferry, What’s Your Mama’s Name, Blood Red and Goin’ Down, and Would You Lay With Me never sounded better.  I love the earlier tunes.  They are classics and Tanya performs them with love.

The acoustic set was over, and Tanya broke into Walking Shoes, another crowd favorite.  Tanya also brought out her traveling hat for the classic tune.

Tanya then talked about her new record with Time Life records and how all the tunes were introduced to her by her father.  She started with Love’s Gonna Live Here, followed by Is Anybody Going to San Antone, Walk Through This World and ended with Rambling Fever.  Tanya made each one of those songs sound as if she has been singing them forever.  It was awesome!

Tanya thanked the crowd for hanging in with her for all these years and broke into…..yes you guessed it, Hangin’ In.  Let me tell you, the weather outside has been threatening rain all day.  It was cloudy and humid.  Tanya’s next song…Lizzie and the Rainman.   I was just hoping the rain would hold off just for a little while.  The next song was Memory, like I’m Gonna Be.  I have to say, I love that song.  It is a well crafted tune and Tanya does a wonderful job singing it.

Tanya then said to the crowd that this next song is a first.  She has never performed it in concert before, so if they stop in the middle of it, that is why.  The band started playing a familiar tune and Tanya started singing in her sexy voice…Boy you’ve got that look in your eye…..Yes, Tanya was covering Mac Davis’s Baby Don’t Get Hooked On Me.    All I have to say is that she should record that tune and release it.  It would be a number one hit!  I was totally impressed.  She then moved right into Down to My Last Teardrop.

Tanya then thanked the crowd.  She thanked Jim and Virginia for all their hard work selling her merchandise and then she did something totally unexpected.  She thanked Dorin and me by name.  “Thank you Dorin and Bob for always coming out to my shows.

I just about died.  Tanya said my name from the stage…I was truly honored.

Then Tanya started singing Amazing Grace and broke right into Delta Dawn.

The show lasted 90 minutes and the rain held out to the very end.  What a great and memorable show.  Dorin needed to track down Jodi for a favor for one of his friends.  In the meantime, we sat in the hotel Lobby and logged onto the computers.  We left a quick update on the Unofficial Tanya Tucker Web Site.  I also was showing Dorin Facebook.  Jodi came by and told us that Facebook and Twitter were two of the best ways to keep up with Tanya.  Dorin asked her what the fan club address was and Jodi gave it to him.

Jodi then said they were getting ready to leave for TN.  We thanked her for all her hard work.  She is always working hard for Tanya.  She also is one very nice person.

Patty, Dorin, Lori and I then went to eat and called it a night.  Patty and I took off back for Duluth.  It was another wonderful and memorable concert experience.
