The Texas Tornado returns to Billy Bob's

You can tell Fort Worth and Billy Bob's love Tanya Tucker -- From the Tanya cds on sale in the gift shop, the neon 'Tanya Tucker' on the wall, the Tanya handprint on the wall of fame, the hotels full of fans that traveled many miles and most of all to the adoring fans with flowers and cheers in front of the stage.  In return, Tanya brought her classic honky-tonk style with her back to Texas.

Porter and the band started out with a long intro to 'Some Kind of Trouble' building up the anticipation.  Tanya strutted out in black wearing her normal bling along with a pistol belt buckle.  She followed up Trouble with another rockin' tune, 'Old Weakness'.

The first time I heard Tanya  sing "Oh What it Did To Me" live I was blown away with the raw emotion and the perfection of the performance.  It is a song that hasn't been in her set lately, so I was pleased to get to hear it again.  Tanya is one of a few performers that can pull out the power and rock out and then take that same energy and emotion and put it into a ballad.

Some of the other songs she performed were: I'll Come Back as Another Woman, part of Lizzie (Tanya pulled the plug on that tune somewhere in the middle), Hangin In, Love Me Like You Used To, It's A Little Too Late, Walking Shoes, that kick butt bar-stool medley Jamestown Ferry-What's Your Mama's Name-Blood Red-Would You Lay With Me and of course the finale, Delta Dawn.

Before starting out the medley Tanya talked about how cool it is to be in Fort Worth and all the wonderful things about Texas (cowboys for one -- I have to admit, it is nice to fit in wearing cowgirl boots).  Tanya also talked about when she performed the Houston Fat Stock Rodeo in the 70s and the song out at the time was 'Would You Lay With Me in a Field of Stone'.  She told the story of Billy Bob telling her she could perform whatever song she wanted to except, Would You Lay With Me.  Made me wonder what year Billy Bob decided the song was ok!

Tanya also talked about Paul Davis and his recent passing.  She said she got a phone call the day of his massive heart attack and as most of you all already know, he passed the following day.  Right after that she sang the hell out of one her best Paul Davis tunes, Love Me Like You Used To, and got a lot of well deserved applause.

Tanya also paid tribute to Eddy Arnold, another legend who recently passed on.  She said she couldn't bring herself to attend the funeral but did watch on tv.  That got her to talking about George Jones and how tough it is going to be when he leaves us behind -- and then laughed and said George Jones is too tough to die!  Tanya then covered a George Jones song (and it also happens to be hubbys favorite TT song) Window Up Above.

Tanya talked about the Time Life project she is working on and how the album will be full of songs she sang when she was growing up.  She said she didn't really sing Tammy Wynette songs because they were too high but she said there is one Tammy song she can do and then performed a totally awesome "Your Good Girl's Gonna Go Bad".  It's hard to imagine anyone performing that song better than Tammy, but I think Tanya pulled it off.

Another legend that Tanya talked about is Charley Pride -- she said she got his autograph at an early age and still has it to this day.  The first time I heard Tanya sing "Is anybody going to San Antone" was in Gulfport, MS last year.  It was really foggy and water was dripping off the brim of Porter's hat and Tanya spontaneously broke into "..... rain dripping of the brim of my hat...." at which point Porter joined in and then eventually the rest of the band.  At Billy Bob's, Tanya and Porter sang the song like it never belonged to Charlie Pride at all -- pure Tanya.

Tanya also resurrected Elvis and performed another haunting cover of "In the Ghetto". Another surprise for the night was her performance of a song from her TNT album.  Tanya said she didn't much like that album, but did like "Brown Eyed Handsome Man."  Tanya's grown-up live version puts the studio cut to shame.  She kicked some butt on that one too.

Tanya also talked about new music and said to expect a new cd out in 2009.  To be honest I am not sure if she meant the Time Life project or the new studio cd would be out in '09 -- at any rate, new stuff on the way.  It's all good.

We should also be expecting to see her new reality TV show some time soon.  Tanya said Tuckertime doesn't have a network yet, but be on the lookout for it.Flowers from Alabama Dee/TUTTFS

Tanya had some new band members with her at Billy Bob's -- a girl on acoustic guitar who was also singing background vocals and a guy on bass.  They both fit in with the band seamlessly, especially on the bass licks and harmonies on Tanya's classic closing number Amazing Grace/Delta Dawn.

Another great show by the legendary Tanya Tucker.

Rock on Tanya..
